Manga Mayhem!!!

  Okay, so we're diving head-first into Gundam with Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin , a 6-part OVA series based on the manga of the same name. This series acts as a prequel of sorts to the original 1979 anime series, and from what I can tell is recommended to watch if you're new to Gundam. This series was produced in 2015 and had a decent budget, so it's a fair bit easier on the eye than something coming out of the late 70s.  Going in, I wasn't 100% sure what was happening at first. The opening scene of the series shows a character called The Red Comet who goes around blowing up ships left and right. This is clearly a shout forward for the benefit of returning fans, but pretty quickly things got into a place I felt more comfortable following along.  The main premise of The Origin is that the far-flung space colony of Side 3 has decided that they want to be free from the influence of the Earth Federation.   If you've been a fan of anime and manga for a long time, you've probably at least heard of the Mobile Suit Gundam series, often referred to as simply 'Gundam'. This series has been going since 1979, as is easily one of the most popular mecha shows in Japan, partially thanks to the popularity of GUNPLA kits, model kits that let you build your own Gundam figurine.  Over the years, I've personally not had a huge relationship with Mecha shows. The biggest connection I ever had was to Power Rangers, which is a western adaptation of Super Sentai, a mecha show in the classical style of super-powered teams with giant robots, fighting Kaijus. According to many sources, Gundam differs considerably as it focuses on pilots who are normal people, and robots that are thanks to advanced in technology, rather than some weird space wizard just giving them to people.  I've tried a few different times to get into mecha shows and movies, and what I mean by that is that I watched ...
